Devon Cutrell is moving to Oregon in the summer. John Gibb is now the coach of the Rancho Bernardo Barbarians. If you would like to help John out or know any high school aged kids that would like to play rugby contact John at 760-737-8684.

Golf Tournament

There will be a meeting at the Camelot Inn in San Marcos at 6 pm on Wednesday July 11. The second annual Gurkha golf tournament will be held September 23rd this year. This years tourney is going to hopefully be bigger than last yearıs if we get the participation from all members of the rugby club. The club NEEDS for everyone to sell FOUR SPONSORSHIPS. The way it has been figured out is, if we sell four tee sponsorships, that money will pay for the entire golf tournament and the rest is solely profit for the club, but WE all have to do our part for this to happen. SO BE AT THIS MEETING!!

Gurkha 10's Tournament:

Miguel Perez is organizing this years tournament. If you would like to help get a hold of him at the Bat Cave, 760-720-2024.

Recruiting

Boys, we need for you to get out and talk up our sport to the masses. Hopefully, youıll talk them into playing for our club. Seriously, we need the bodies to replace or fill in for those who are stepping down from playing first side matches. John Gibb is looking at passing the scrum half torch onto someone else. Ray Steel is concentrating on coaching and the same with Joe Clarke. Get with Dan and get new schedule cards.

Home Pitch and Club House

Ray Steel is looking into the purchase of a rugby pitch for the Gurkhas. To help fund this venture we need to maximize our efforts in ALL our Fund Raising activities!! So if you want to play on OUR OWN PITCH, volunteer your time and/or services to the club and help out whenever you can.

Oasis 7's Tourney

Pool play opened in an inauspicious manner. Despite sneaking in a fourth sub (the tourney rules only allowed three) the Gurkhas were unable to overcome the young and spry Not Really Ancient Aztecs, along the way losing one of their speedsters, English Scott, to a rib injury. Though the second game did not promise to fare any better, being against highly-regarded Santa Monica, our boys in blue displayed impressive ball handling and support in the first half keeping the game within reach at one try to SM's two. The second half, however, saw the opposing side add another two trys while the Gurkhas could muster none. The final pool matchup was against the O.C. Bucks. A superb offensive effort ensued, including a solo try by Phil Martinez who utilized a masterful "Joe Special" dummy pass to freeze the defense and scamper in from midfield. (Reports that Phil was heard giggling as he darted through the gap are unsubstantiated at press time.) The effort fell short, however, as an ill-advised pass, picked off and taken to the try zone untouched, proved to be the difference in this 24-19 loss.

The 0-3 record was good enough for the Plate bracket (home sweet home), and as fortune would have it the first round provided a rematch against the Bucks. This game saw the return of Scott "Ow, my ribs" Mitchell and the Gurkhas fully capitalized on the opportunity for revenge, notching an impressive four try to one victory. The semi-finals saw our heros pitted against an impressive looking Oxy Old Boys side. After giving up an early try, the never-say-die Gurkhas fought back to a 14-12 lead, which they continued to maintain until late in the game, in no small part due to a try-saving tackle by Josh "Speed Demon" Williams. (Josh unfortunately suffered a knee injury on the play. At this time it looks like he will be out from 1-3 mos. We wish Josh a speedy recovery.) Hopes were dashed, though, when Oxy scored at full time, securing them a berth in the finals where they handily dispatched Care Unit, an Old Aztecs side.
