North County Flying Penguins win Mustangs Invitational Youth Tournament

The U-12 Flying Penguins A-side defeated Fullerton 30-15 in the final of the Mustangs Invitational Youth Rugby Tournament to capture the winners' trophy on Saturday, Feb. 24 2007.
The Flying Penguins got off to slow start and trailed 10-0 halfway into the first half against the Lions in the final. The Penguins bounced back, though, leading at halftime 15-10 following a try-scoring rolling maul powered by hooker Noah Rabbani from 10 meters out and two long runs by winger Kevin Vo.
Vo got the scoring started in the second half with a try on a kick-and-chase from deep in Penguins territory. Fullerton answered, bringing the score to 20-15 with a long run down the touchline.
But the Penguins put the match away on a 30-meter run by tight-head prop Jacob Nieblas, set up by a huge ruck by loose-head prop Derreck Cooper, and a seven-meter dash by fly-half Austin Warczakowski on a pinpoint pass from scrum-half Peter Lazarz.
The Flying Penguins A won all four tournament matches, The feat was made even more impressive because the Penguins had only eight iron men, giving them but one sub. Defensively, they were led by scrum-half/hooker Cameron Richards and winger Matthew Watts, who contributed several form tackles.
In pool play, the A-side defeated the San Diego Mustangs B 30-0 in the opener, knocked off the Old Aztecs Youth 20-5 and defeated San Clemente A 25-0.
The Flying Penguins B-side fought valiantly in what must have been the tournament's toughest pool, falling to the Mustangs A 25-0, losing to finalist Fullerton 15-0, and dropping a 5-0 heartbreaker to San Clemente B.
The Penguins B also fielded but eight players. Their defense was led by the relentless tackling of Tyler Gibbs. Brett Glaze served as captain and fly-half.
The rest of the B-side that softened up Fullerton for the A-side was made up of prop Scott Kapitske and prop/fly-half Trey Hondo, hookers Nathan Wickham and Saul Mendoza, winger Jacob Neuhus and scrum-half Grayson Marble.
